Jackson’s heart pounded as he stepped out of the lunar module. The silence of the moon’s surface was overwhelming, a sharp contrast to the nagging chatter of Houston Control in his earpiece. The voices were a high-pitched whine. Earth seemed too far away. He glanced at Tessa, the mission commander, and James, the pilot. They were hunched over their control panels. They were swamped and looked worried about something.

He found the crystal in a small crater near the module. It sparkled in the lunar sunlight, a shard of something otherworldly. Jackson picked it up. The crystal was like nothing he had seen before, swirling with colors and glowing softly.

“Hey, Tessa, look at this!” Jackson called out upon entering the module.

Tessa looked over, raising an eyebrow. “What is it?”

“I’m not sure. It’s... weird. I can feel it tingling in my hand.”

As he examined the crystal, the tingle became a steady pulse. Suddenly, he could hear thoughts that weren’t his own. He knew Tessa was thinking about her family back home, and James was worried about the mission’s success. The voices grew louder until they were clear as day.

Jackson dropped the crystal in shock. “Did you hear that?”

Tessa and James looked at him with wide eyes. “Hear what?” Tessa asked.

“The voices. Your thoughts. I could hear them,” Jackson trembled.

Tessa and James exchanged bewildered glances. “We heard it too,” James replied quietly.

The three of them stood in a triangle, stunned by the sudden exposure of their innermost thoughts. Fear and suspicion grew as it seemed their minds collided, secrets spilling out. But as the minutes passed, something unexpected happened. The crystal’s power grew, wrapping them in a warm, comforting embrace. Fear began to fade, replaced by a strange sense of camaraderie. They could feel each other's hopes, dreams, and fears as if a veil had lifted. They were no longer just colleagues; an intimate connection bound them, a silent conversation transcending words.

Their short mission on the moon was almost complete. The thought of returning to Earth without the crystal was unbearable.

James held the crystal out in front of them and had a thought. “We must bring it back, maybe hide it for ourselves.”

“I do not agree,” Tessa said, “We have to study it, understand it, and maybe even share its power with the rest of the world.”

“Yeah— maybe,” Jackson quipped.

James carefully placed the crystal in a secure compartment of the lunar module. “Something tells me this thing is more than just a rock. It’s a piece of something much greater. We should definitely keep this down low for now.”

The journey back to Earth was filled with excitement and apprehension.

“I’m excited to share our discovery,” James said. “But what if everyone can hear each other’s thoughts?”

Tessa pondered on that theory. “Will secrets and privacy become a thing of the past? Maybe this is what humanity needs to move past ignorance, hate, and war.”

James puffed out his bottom lip. “Perhaps. It’s a big responsibility. We need to be careful.”

“I agree. This could be some Fantastic Four-type stuff, and the last thing we want to do is create a world of potential superheroes and villains.”

“You’re crazy if you think that’ll happen,” Tessa laughed.

“Who knows,” James shrugged. “It seems there are no rules now.”

As they approached Earth, Houston Control grew insistent. Their communication had been cut off for hours. They did not even notice; they were too engaged with each other's thoughts. Houston asked about what they saw just before their transmission ended. Something about an alien spacecraft.

“Alien spacecraft?” Jackson looked at Tessa and James, baffled. “Is this a joke?”

Tessa shook her head. “That is ridiculous.”

James laughed to himself. He imagined conspiracy theories had run amok from a fuzzy image. When they touched down on Earth, they received a lavish welcome. As for the crystal and their mind link, they kept it a secret. Geologists examined the crystal and found nothing unexpected.

During the debriefing, they were asked questions they weren't prepared for, questions about UFOs and strange images they didn’t recall. “Did we really miss an alien ship?” Jackson asked through their shared mind link.

“A fuzzy image and a communication interruption do not equal an alien ship,” Tessa replied with her mind.

Once released from the rigorous post-flight procedures, the trio gathered in Tessa’s living room. Holding hands, they emptied their minds, causing the connection to flare to life again, but this time— something was different.

“I’m hearing so many voices,” James whispered, his face contorted in pain. “World leaders, scientists, everyday people...”

“It’s overwhelming,” Tessa gasped. “The crystal has become some sort of beacon. Maybe even a transmitter.”

Jackson’s eyes widened with realization. “It is not the crystal stored miles away in a lab; it is us.”

The myriad of voices grew louder, bringing the three of them to their knees. But as sudden as a flick of a switch, they wondered why they were kneeling. They remembered nothing but a warm connection they shared. They instinctively felt that no one else could understand what they had been through, even if they could not quite put it into words.
